    Castlebay

    Barra's town and the first CalMac connection. The ride lives and dies on the timetable.

    Eriskay

    The causeway chain begins. Machair, nowhere to hide. The islands are already exposed here.

    South Uist

    Flat, hard in a westerly+23 m up · 23 m down · 55 m

    Long days, churches, crofts. Almost no climbing. If the weather turns there is very little cover and a long way to the next shop.

    Benbecula

    Easy, the middle of the chain+50 m up · 45 m down · 38 m

    Airport if you have to bail. Otherwise keep north. Stay on the cycling waymarks through the chain.

    North Uist / Lochmaddy

    Hills at last. The road to Lewis climbs. After days of machair this feels like a different island.
